ARTJOG MMXXII: Arts in Common – Expanding Awareness

‘ARTJOG MMXXII: Arts in Common – Expanding Awareness’ concludes the ARTJOG arts-in-common series, which, since 2019, has framed the three exhibitions in the thematic triplet of ‘space’ – ‘time’ – ‘consciousness’. This theme is interpreted as an effort to expand the accumulative and reciprocal awareness between artist and audience by reflecting on present and future reality and the hopes that must be realised. One of the main agendas in Expanding Awareness is to pay attention to arts that support inclusiveness. This is implemented in the curatorial selection, programs, and broader implementation. ARTJOG arts-in-common is not only about ‘art for all’ but also about the aspiration to create a shared world.

One of the main agendas in Expanding Awareness is to pay attention to arts that support inclusivity. The curatorial selection and the design of its educational programs cover a spectrum that so far exists outside the ‘mainstream’ of Indonesian contemporary art, including art practiced by children, youth and artists with disabilities. With a projection to make the agenda inherent in the following editions of the festival, ARTJOG MMXXII at least wants to start with the intention of self-criticism: That exclusivism in the Indonesian art world has been going on for too long, and it represents a wider social reality. On the other hand, ARTJOG believes that art can still act as a tool to re-interrogate understanding, critically examine contradictory realities that are intertwined around us, and to demonstrate our role and responsibility as humans in it.
