Uji ‘Hahan’ Handoko Eko Saputro

b. 1983, Kebumen, Indonesia
Lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Uji Handoko Eko Saputro (also known as ‘Hahan’) graduated from the Faculty of Fine Art at Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Hahan’s work combines the aesthetics of traditional Javanese mythology with popular youth culture, underground comics, film, music, and street culture into a distinctly bold visual language exploding with colour. In 2008, he participated in the National Art Studio’s artist in residence programme in Seoul, Korea and in the same year was a finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize.

He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including the ‘7th Asia Pacific Triennial’ at Queensland Art Gallery (Brisbane, Australia, 2012), and ‘The Curious Deal’, curated by Michael Schindhelm and Alia Swastika at Deutsches Hygiene-Museum (Dresden, Germany, 2019). His art works have been collected by several art museums, including the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane, Australia; the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne, Australia; and the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in Canberra, Australia.

He was also a co-founder of the ‘Ace House Collective’ — a young artists’ collective and initiative space based in Yogyakarta which tries to capture the culture of Indonesian contemporary society through multidisciplinary work.
