Timothy Lai

b. 1987, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia
Lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island, USA

Timothy Lai received his BA in Communication from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2009, and his MFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2017. Timothy’s colourful, fluid figurative paintings use the language of art history and myth to explore his biracial identity. Born to a Mexican American mother and a father of Chinese heritage, Lai turned from abstraction to figuration during his graduate studies. Based on scenarios from his own life, including navigating interracial relationships, Timothy’s paintings feature characteristically contorted figures.

His work has been featured in group presentations at various galleries including Chart (New York), Jack Barrett (New York), Fabian Lang (Switzerland), Essex Flowers (New York), Bass & Reiner Gallery (California), Good Naked Gallery (New York), and Field Projects (New York). His first post-graduate solo exhibition was in 2019 at 00-LA Gallery, following a solo exhibition at Jack Barrett in 2021. Timothy was also awarded the 2022 Rhode Island State Council of the Arts Fellowship in Painting.
