Phan Cam Thuong is a painter, educator, researcher and art critic. He is known for his serene depictions of figures and landscapes, combining natural paint pigments and traditional Chinese calligraphy techniques, depicting his interest in the history of Buddhist scholars. He learned calligraphy as a youth and went on to serve in the Vietnam War before receiving a degree from the Hanoi College of Fine Arts in 1984.
He taught at the Department of Theory and History of Art, Vietnam University of Fine Arts (1984 – 2002). As the most influential Vietnamese researcher and art critic in the 20 years since Doi Moi (1990 -2010), Phan Cam Thuong writes articles about exhibition criticism, researches ancient culture, and compiles books about ancient and modern art, and artists. His important publications include, ‘Vietnamese Fine Arts’ and ‘Fine Arts in the Village’ (written with Nguyen Quan), ‘Vietnamese Ancient Sculpture’, ‘Vietnamese Young Artists’, and ‘Material civilisation of Vietnamese People’.
