LIM SOO NGEE – ‘MASQUE SONATA’

Art Porters Gallery, Singapore

23 December 2021 – 20 February 2022

Masque Sonata, a solo exhibition by sculptor Lim Soo Ngee (b. 1962, Singapore) presents his latest works in figural woodcarvings and paintings completed in the past 20 months.

Soo Ngee’s sculptures are well known for their minimalistic forms that are expressive, melancholic, and solitary. His works focus on the relationships between the environment, its inhabitants and spiritual alienation. Evidenced by his whimsical, humorous, and poetic narratives, his works offer his perspective on the state of the human condition.

In Masque Sonata, Soo Ngee expresses his interpretation of Masque, a form of festive courtly entertainment that flourished in 16th and early 17th-century Europe. The exhibition is an extension of his thoughts in the context of current global events and societal developments, for instance universally relatable themes like hypocrisy, political scrambles, the global pandemic catastrophe, actions of the controllers against the controlled, as well as the more personal side of things: relationships, ritual processes, and emotional struggles. Soo Ngee has realised that many put on and change their “masks” to face or confront these various situations in life. This series of works evokes a piece of melody, with its different movements and times, combinations of instruments and tunes.

Life is full of humour and contradictions, romance and absurdity, just like a sonata.
