Ashley Yeo – ‘Till the Last Blossom’

Art Encounters, Singapore

17 September – 24 October 2022

For its ninth edition, Art Encounters by Art Outreach, a long-running travelling exhibition series housed in repurposed shipping containers, will travel to the outdoor atrium of Plaza Singapura from 17 September to 24 October 2022, featuring an original, site-specific paper installation and wall mural, alongside rarely-seen drawings and sculptural objects by local artist Ashley Yeo.

Best known for her intricate and delicate paper sculptures that take months to design and hand-cut with a scalpel, Ashley Yeo will be creating a site-specific, cascading paper installation within one container that expands on her interest in the material as one of her larger and more elaborate paper-based installations to date. Audiences will be able to step inside and experience the ethereal work that will surround them, providing a rare opportunity to observe the delicate details of the artwork close-up. A selection of paper works that demonstrate Yeo’s artistic practice will also be displayed, including a filigree paper cube and screen installation.

Alongside her paper objects and installations are a series of pigment-on-paper drawings, a medium which Yeo began her artistic practice in and continues to develop but has rarely exhibited which reflect the importance of natural elements and floral symmetry to her body of work. The drawings are created in a similarly meticulous and laborious process over months, with a mechanical precision that belie their hand-drawn nature, a testament to the artist’s devotion to her craft across materials.

In keeping with Art Encounter’s mission to bring art closer to the public, Ashley will be live-drawing a pastel mural inside the container on the opening weekend (September 17 and 18), and continue to be present on Saturday afternoons (September 24 and October 1, 8, 15, 22) to interact with visitors and present paper-cutting demonstrations that reveal her fascinating technique.

There will also be an educational activity station available daily throughout the exhibition for younger visitors to try their hand at decorative paper cutting, where they can make their own candle holders and decorative decals out of paper, while gaining a deeper understanding of the medium.
