Lavender Chang has developed the images in ‘A Glimpse of Radiance from Under’ over the past three years, based on the parameters she had set to embark on a journey – a walk to nowhere, or a bus ride to an unknown destination – and took pictures without purposefully framing them.

male gaze

The male gaze is a manner of treating women’s bodies as objects to be surveyed, which is associated by feminists with hegemonic masculinity, both in everyday social interaction and in relation to their representation in visual media.

AWDB recommended reading: John Berger’s investigation into the male gaze in his book ‘Ways of Seeing’; “men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at.”
